Previously the most recent imagery I was finding of hte Louisiana coast on Google earth was While it’s a little older than the new imagery available on Google Earth, I do find it to be of a higher resolution than what is available on Google Earth. Google Earth however is a little easier to use. Generally I’ll use Google Earth to look for areas I want to fish, or other features, then if I want a closer look than what the imagery on Google Earth can provide, I’ll use Lacoast. April 4th, Feeling Springy After the longest, most fishles, miserable winter I can remember, I was finally able to shake the fierce case of the shack nasties, winter blues, or whatever you call the malady of going entirely too long without feeling a tug on the line. And as it turned out there was plenty of time for Christmas shopping during this last month, because there was precious little fishing to be done. December opened with a few days in which the main Wye was much too high, but a grayling day was certainly possible on some of the tributaries. Next came heavy rain which put all our rivers without exception into flood, then equally heavy snowfall and a severe cold snap which seemed to disrupt life in the Welsh Marches more than any other part of the country – Shawbury Airfield in Shropshire recorded minus 13 degrees one night with a northern wind blowing.

All this precipitation was followed by warmer weather, but the steady thaw kept all our rivers running full for quite a while. It was a brief but welcome respite and quite a warm day, despite continuous drizzle. More rain fell during Christmas night and the river quickly rose again. After Boxing Day, more snow, more rain, then a gradual thaw which kept the rivers running fuller than ever; there were no more fishing chances during On the 1st of December PA from Bridgnorth was unlucky enough to lose a rod with reel and line somewhere below the bridge at Lyepole.

As I recall, the Lugg was already going quite hard then, but I’m sure this should turn up sooner or later. The rod was a 7ft 6 inch Snowbee and PA can be reached on

They do not in the army, but he would have learned civilian ways had he been long discharged. He has an air of authority and he is obviously Scottish. As to Barbados, his complaint is elephantiasis, which is West Indian and not British. It is no wonder that after the study of such a character I used and amplified his methods when in later life I tried to build up a scientific detective who solved cases on his own merits and not through the folly of the criminal. Bell took a keen interest in these detective tales and even made suggestions which were not, I am bound to say, very practical.

I kept in touch with him for many years and he used to come upon my platform to support me when I contested Edinburgh in When I took over his out-patient work he warned me that a knowledge of Scottish idioms was necessary, and I, with the confidence of youth, declared that I had got it.

I hope you will find this site a “window” to our collective angling past, and that you share my interest in the history of fishing, the equipment available in different eras, and the techniques used by those who fly or coarse fished the waters in prior centuries. Historic Angling Enterprises is dedicated to furthering a better understanding the history of fly fishing and coarse bait fishing. To that end this site will be constantly modified as historical materials are added over the coming weeks and months.

To that end I go forth, alone and also with other kindred spirits, to the mountains, forests and other wild places, fully clothed and equipped for an earlier era, down to the last detail, including the food I intend to consume. It is or should be a challenging learning experience and a great deal of fun. And when one adds the element of fishing to the reenactment equation, it gives a one a very good education about what anglers living and fishing several centuries ago encountered in their pursuit of our finned adversaries.

You will find, I believe, that the colonial angler, whether it be George Washington or some nameless urchin living with parents along a creek on the frontier; or the mountain man of the next century following in the footsteps of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, had virtually the same motivation and used much the same approach as we do today. Believe me when I say that little has changed over the centuries when it is man vs.

So come walk with me and my ‘fellow-travelers’ as we journey through centuries of angling fact and conjecture. Join us as we strive to understand and recreate, to the extent reasonably possible, flies and fishing tackle from eras ancient to reasonably modern: In the meantime, join us by the fireplace, as you consider our wares.
